A4 Saxony Overhaul Starts April 1 With Lane Reductions, Exit Closures

The overhaul targets worn concrete to keep traffic safe on a key east–west route.

Overview

  • From Wednesday evening, April 1, traffic in the work zone shifts to two lanes in each direction with a 100 km/h limit.
  • The Hohenstein-Ernstthal exit toward Erfurt closes April 1 to July 8, with drivers routed via Glauchau-Ost or a turnback at Wüstenbrand for access.
  • Glauchau-Ost is planned to close toward Erfurt from mid-July to October, with exact dates to be announced by Autobahn GmbH.
  • The project runs through December 2026 and renews about 9.3 km of carriageway toward Erfurt with new concrete, at a cost of roughly €38 million.
  • Work also repairs 13 bridges, installs two overhead sign gantries and two side arms, replaces guardrails, and overhauls drainage with four retention basins, which may lengthen trips as another A4 work zone near Chemnitz continues through December.
