A2 Milk Company Recalls Three U.S. Infant Formula Batches Over Toxin

The FDA says a heat-stable toxin found in select tins poses a vomiting risk for babies.

Overview

  • The FDA notice, issued Saturday, May 2, said a2 Milk voluntarily pulled three a2 Platinum Premium USA 0–12 month batches after tests detected the cereulide toxin.
  • The recall covers 63,078 tins with about 16,428 sold to consumers, and the product was available on the company’s website, Amazon, and Meijer stores.
  • Cereulide is a toxin made by some Bacillus cereus strains that can cause nausea and vomiting within 30 minutes to six hours, and mixing formula with hot water does not remove it.
  • Testing followed new guidance from New Zealand food regulators, no illnesses have been reported, and buyers are told to discard the tins or return them for a refund.
  • The company’s shares fell about 12% on the ASX on Monday after the news, and it says formula sold in other markets was not affected.
