8th Pay Commission Sets Regional Hearings, Extends Input Deadline to May 31

The panel is gathering evidence to shape future pay and pension proposals.

Overview

  • Official notices list regional consultations in Hyderabad on May 18–19, Srinagar on June 1–4, and Ladakh on June 8 to hear employees and pensioners.
  • The commission extended the window for submitting memoranda to May 31, with separate local cutoffs of May 8 and May 16 tied to specific meetings.
  • Staff unions, in an initial meeting on April 28, filed demands that include a higher minimum pay of about ₹69,000, 6% annual increments, and at least five promotions over a 30-year career.
  • Representatives also pressed to scrap the contributory National Pension System and the new Unified Pension Scheme in favor of the earlier pension model, along with higher housing and risk allowances and expanded leave.
  • No pay or pension changes have been recommended yet, and the panel led by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai is still collecting input on revisions that could affect salaries, dearness allowance, and pensions for roughly 1.2 crore people.
