84 Dogs Seized From Granby Breeder in Great Dane Neglect Investigation

The animals remain in protective custody during an active criminal case.

Overview

  • Daisy's Dane Sanctuary and Newton County deputies, which executed a warrant Monday in Granby, removed 84 dogs in an eight-hour operation and transported them to Pleasant Hill for intake and care.
  • The Newton County Sheriff's Office says 48-year-old Devin Harris is jailed on animal neglect or abandonment, with KMBC reporting added counts of felony animal abuse and two misdemeanors.
  • Rescuers report about 99% of the dogs need treatment for problems that include severe weight loss, parasites, injuries, and dehydration in very young puppies under a veterinarian's care.
  • Five dogs were found dead at the property, and rescuers also recovered two cockatiels, a boa constrictor, four scorpions, a tarantula, and a sugar glider.
  • The dogs are being housed and treated in Pleasant Hill and are not available for adoption because they are evidence, a status that can keep animals in custody for months and strains large-breed care and foster capacity.
