Overview

  • The 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which struck Monday off Maasim in Sarangani province, caused violent shaking, collapsed buildings and triggered landslides and tsunami alerts across southern Mindanao.
  • Authorities say at least 55 people have died, about 31 remain missing, hundreds were injured and roughly 45,000 residents are displaced after thousands of homes were damaged.
  • Rescue and relief work has been slowed by more than 2,000 aftershocks, heavy rain and damaged roads and bridges that have left some rural villages inaccessible.
  • Local officials and aid agencies have requested military helicopters and launched emergency relief operations, with the Philippine Red Cross, IFRC and church groups providing shelter, water, medical care and fundraising drives.
  • Damage to schools, hospitals, ports and power lines has disrupted services for thousands of families and students, and officials warn recovery and psychosocial support will take months.
