Overview
- A shallow 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off southern Mindanao near Maasim on June 8, producing violent shaking, landslides and widespread building collapse.
- Officials report at least 61 dead, about 40 still missing and 1,403 injured with roughly 45,000 people displaced and more than 346,000 people affected.
- Rescue work has been slowed by thousands of aftershocks, heavy rain and blocked roads so authorities say chances of finding survivors are now very low and operations are increasingly focused on recovery.
- Key infrastructure suffered heavy damage, including 45 road sections, eight bridges, one airport and two seaports, widespread power outages and damage to 8,642 schools with reports of a collapsed two-storey school in General Santos.
- The quake produced coastal uplift mapped at about 2 metres that exposed seabed and killed coral and fish, creating new hazards for coastal communities and threatening fisheries and livelihoods in the Cotabato Trench region.
