Overview
- A shallow 7.7-magnitude undersea quake struck off Flores on Saturday, generating hundreds to more than 1,500 aftershocks and prompting short-lived tsunami warnings.
- Indonesian authorities report at least 68 dead and more than 200 injured as rescue teams continue searching damaged towns and rubble-strewn villages.
- More than 1,300 homes were damaged, nearly 250 were destroyed on Flores, and thousands were displaced with estimates ranging from about 5,000 in temporary shelters to roughly 12,800 unable to return home.
- The government declared a 14-day emergency for Aug. 15–28 and has deployed thousands of military and police personnel, flown dozens of aircraft with about 275 tonnes of aid, and set up emergency field hospitals to treat the injured.
