7% Pay Deal Reached for Bavaria’s Local Transit, Strikes Paused

A mid-May vote will decide the pact against the backdrop of strained city budgets.

Overview

  • A deal announced Thursday between Verdi and the municipal employers covers more than 20 city-run bus, tram, and subway operators with roughly 9,000 to 10,000 workers.
  • Pay rises total 7% in three steps: 4.1% back to January 1, 2026 with at least €120, another 1% in September 2026, and 1.9% on January 1, 2027.
  • Working time improves with a cut to 37.5 hours a week from 2029, a 10.5-hour minimum rest between shifts, and higher Sunday and night-duty surcharges.
  • The result now goes to a Verdi members’ ballot with both sides to respond by May 15, and no warning strikes will occur during this period.
  • City treasurers warned this week that empty local coffers could force fare increases or service cuts unless higher operating costs receive more state or federal support.
