Overview
- 50Hertz awarded the turnkey contract to Siemens Energy and Neptun Smulders Offshore Renewables on June 17, 2026, to deliver a 2 GW offshore converter platform and an onshore converter station for the North Sea Connector 2 project.
- The consortium will design, procure, build and commission the systems with 50Hertz targeting commercial operation by the end of 2034.
- NSORe will fabricate the offshore platform mainly at Neptun Werft’s Rostock‑Warnemünde yard and Smulders will build the steel jacket in Vlissingen, while Siemens Energy will supply transformers, converters and SF6‑free switchgear largely from German factories.
- Siemens Energy also won a long‑term service contract to provide maintenance, IT services and on‑call support, and 50Hertz says the work could create more than 500 long‑term jobs in Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania.
- North Sea Connector 2 forms part of the NordOstLink programme (including the LanWin6 and DC32 links), builds on prior 2023 cable procurements and 2024 technology awards, and follows 50Hertz talks on a second 2 GW platform that would expand regional HVDC capacity.
