5-Year-Old Drowns at Shasta Lake After Entering Water Without Life Jacket

Officials warn cold lake water can quickly disable swimmers despite warm spring weather.

Overview

  • Shasta County deputies responded to Turntable Bay around 11:22 a.m. Monday after reports of a child missing in the water.
  • Investigators said the 5-year-old entered the lake without a life jacket and slipped underwater before family could pull the child out.
  • A coordinated search by the sheriff’s office, Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service, CHP Air Operations, and the county dive team found the child at about 12:33 p.m.
  • Medical personnel pronounced the child dead and the body was released to the Shasta County Coroner’s Office.
  • Authorities reported no signs of foul play and urged visitors to wear life jackets and prepare for very cold water despite warm air temperatures.
