4,500 Bags Tossed in Palencia’s Pedrea at Cristo del Otero

Local groups with schools help spread the custom citywide.

Overview

  • The pedrea, which took place Sunday after mass and a procession for Santo Toribio, drew hundreds to the Cristo del Otero to catch bags of bread and soft cheese.
  • Organizers tossed 4,500 small bags from the hermitage balcony to the crowd at the monument's base.
  • Another 2,100 bags went to local schools so children could join the tradition.
  • A stall at the foot of the Cristo offered 3,500 more bags for €1.50 each, according to El Norte de Castilla.
  • Representatives from city institutions and the Cristo neighborhood association took part in the toss as sunny weather encouraged strong turnout.
