450+ Pet Rats Pulled From Condemned Long Island Home, Rehoming Push Underway

Volunteers are racing the clock before a winter storm to finish captures.

Overview

  • A small Strong Island Animal Rescue team has collected more than 450 domesticated rats from a Rocky Point house, with roughly 30 still to be caught.
  • More than 200 rats have been placed in foster or permanent homes, and over 200 still need adopters.
  • A local animal hospital is treating mites, eye infections and bite wounds across the group, with about ten euthanized so far.
  • Rescue partners in Virginia, Connecticut and other states have taken in over 50 rats, with volunteers coordinating out-of-state transport.
  • The homeowner faces charges of animal cruelty, neglect and child endangerment, has pleaded not guilty, and police say a three-year-old lived in the unsanitary home.
