Overview
- The national seismology institute registered an mbLg 3.9 earthquake at 02:31 Canary time on Tuesday with an epicenter in Atlantic waters east of Gran Canaria and a focal depth of 16 kilometers.
- The event reached a maximum reported intensity of III, a weak level at which people may notice vibrations, a dull thud, or light objects moving especially when at rest or on upper floors.
- Residents reported feeling the tremor across many municipalities of Gran Canaria and in parts of Fuerteventura, including Telde, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Brígida, Antigua, Tuineje and Pájara.
- No damage has been reported and local emergency services have not issued alerts, but the IGN cautions that initial parameters can be revised after further analysis and that monitoring will continue.
- Seismologists say the Canary Islands commonly experience low-to-moderate quakes driven by volcanic and tectonic processes and that signs of volcanic reactivation would require sustained swarms, changing depths or locations, ground deformation, or gas and geochemical shifts.
