31 NCC Cadets Hospitalised at Jabalpur Camp After Mass Illness

Investigations into heat exposure and possible food or water contamination could lead to a review of training safety protocols.

Overview

  • Thirty-one cadets from the IIITDM Jabalpur training camp were taken to Victoria District Hospital after falling ill with symptoms such as headache, dizziness, vomiting, stomach pain and drowsiness.
  • Hospital officials say most cadets are stable and under observation but a small number remain in serious condition in intensive care, with reports varying between seven and ten ICU cases.
  • Health teams and food-safety inspectors have collected samples of camp food and drinking water and are testing them while medical staff continue to monitor the affected trainees.
  • The camp began on May 14 and runs through May 24 with more than 450 cadets attending, and district authorities note the region has recorded extreme temperatures in the mid-40s Celsius that raise heatstroke risk.
  • Officials have informed families, deployed extra medical teams to the hospital, and signalled an expected review of NCC procedures for scheduling outdoor drills during peak summer heat.
