3-Month-Old Killed in Three-Vehicle I-215 Crash in Riverside Is Identified

CHP is investigating a chain collision involving a stopped Honda, a Nissan then a Toyota that crushed the Nissan carrying the children.

Overview

  • The chain-reaction collision on northbound I-215 near Eucalyptus Avenue Sunday left a 3-month-old dead and sent at least five people to hospitals.
  • The coroner identified the infant as Leon Edgington Morales of Perris, who was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m.
  • CHP said a Honda Civic stopped in traffic, a Nissan Versa hit the Honda, then a Toyota RAV4 hit the Nissan, crushing its rear where two children sat in car seats.
  • Firefighters cut two adults from the Nissan and treated a toddler with minor to moderate injuries, while bystanders had tried to pry open the doors before crews arrived and animal control took a dog from the car.
  • CHP issued a SigAlert, a major lane closure used for serious incidents, that shut most northbound lanes for hours, and investigators asked witnesses to call the Accident Investigation Unit at 951-324-7210.
