2nd Call Worker Fatally Shot in South Los Angeles

The killing raises doubts about 2nd Call's ability to keep staff safe during street outreach.

Overview

  • Police say the shooting Thursday afternoon around 3:15–3:30 p.m. near Crenshaw Boulevard and 59th Place in Hyde Park left a man dead while he worked on weed abatement with a 2nd Call team.
  • The victim was identified as 51-year-old Reginald Foreman, who had been with the gang-intervention nonprofit for less than two months.
  • LAPD homicide detectives said a person was seen running from the scene, no arrests have been announced, and investigators are actively searching for the gunman.
  • 2nd Call executive director Skipp Townsend described the attack as apparently unprovoked; the organization posted tributes, is meeting with staff to support healing, and must weigh how to continue outreach after a second affiliated death since July 4.
  • The killing spotlights risks faced by street-based violence-intervention workers and could lead 2nd Call and similar groups to alter or temporarily pause in-person outreach while police investigations and safety reviews proceed.
