26 Injured in Nagaland Village Clash Over Land as Police Restore Order

The confrontation in Moava followed a tribal body’s push to remove alleged illegal constructions under customary land rules.

Overview

  • Police said security forces have been deployed, the situation is under control, and normal traffic has been restored.
  • Reports describe years of friction over curbs on land buyers and claims of unauthorized structures in and around Moava, according to the Chakhroma Public Organisation.
  • CPO leaders say a group of about 70–80 people blocked their visit, with stone-pelting injuring the Extra Assistant Commissioner of Medziphema, a police constable and roughly 24 youths.
  • Officials said several hundred youths later entered the village, allegedly set some houses on fire and damaged vehicles during the retaliation.
  • The CPO cites a December 2 notice with a December 25 deadline to remove alleged encroachments, while the village headman says he alerted authorities but police were outnumbered as properties were torched.
