21-Year-Old Dies After Falling Into Westford Quarry

State and local investigators are working at the site as officials warn the privately owned, posted quarry is dangerous.

Overview

  • Emergency crews responded to a 911 call about a fall at Merrill’s Quarry and found a 21-year-old face-down in the water at the bottom of the quarry.
  • Firefighters pulled the man from the water and began life-saving measures before he was rushed to Lowell General Hospital where he later died.
  • Authorities confirmed the victim’s name has not been released and said he died from injuries sustained in the fall and from prolonged time in the water.
  • The Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, and Westford police are jointly investigating the circumstances of the death.
  • Officials stressed that Merrill’s Quarry is private property with numerous No Trespassing signs and steep, unstable drops and deep water that make it an extremely hazardous location and part of a pattern of recent quarry deaths in the state this summer.
