2,000-Gallon Aquarium Bursts at Fox Lake Pet Store

A suspected seam failure flooded the shop and killed most of the tank’s fish, with owners now awaiting insurance rulings.

Overview

  • The 2,000-gallon display tank, which burst Monday, sent thousands of gallons of water through Somethin' Fishy Pets and killed most of the more than 350 fish that were inside.
  • Store owners and helpers scrambled to rescue fish after the break and were able to save only a few dozen animals while video posted by the shop shows the tank suddenly failing.
  • The owners said the tank appears to have failed at a top seam, the tank and much of the nearby merchandise are a loss, and the damaged display will need to be removed.
  • Insurance coverage remains uncertain and a family friend has launched a GoFundMe to help cover replacement and rebuilding costs as community members and the landlord assist with cleanup.
  • The shop’s current owners bought the nearly 30-year-old business in February 2025 and had been renovating the long-standing centerpiece tank, which drew customers and anchored the store’s sales.
