2-Acre Birdland Brush Fire Knocked Down After Threatening Homes

Firefighters stopped the spread after evacuations near canyon-rim homes.

Overview

  • SDFD received the call around 11:47 a.m. and halted the fire’s forward progress shortly after 1 p.m., a department spokesperson said.
  • The blaze burned about two acres under transmission lines near 2255 Meadow Lark Drive, just west of Mission Center Road in the area north of Mission Valley.
  • San Diego police evacuated nearby residents and temporarily closed Mission Center Road from Murray Ridge Road to Sevan Court for roughly an hour.
  • More than 80 firefighters, multiple brush rigs and a helicopter responded, though air drops were withheld due to the proximity of power lines.
  • No injuries were reported as gusty winds and very low humidity complicated the response, and the cause remains under investigation.
