19th Avenue Repaving Triggers Weekend Traffic Snarls in San Francisco

Caltrans is compressing about 40 days of work into three weekend shutdowns to limit weekday disruption.

Overview

  • Northbound 19th Avenue is closed for repaving this weekend between Sloat Boulevard and Lincoln Way with one lane reserved for transit, emergency crews and local access.
  • Caltrans reported long backups after drivers entered the transit-only lane and urged detours on Sunset Boulevard, Sloat Boulevard, Lincoln Way, Brotherhood Way, Lake Merced Boulevard, Junipero Serra Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
  • SFMTA said several Muni routes will face delays through the corridor.
  • Local owners expect weekend revenue to drop about 10% to 20%, and one florist fears a bigger hit if May work overlaps Mother's Day.
  • The agency plans two more weekend closures on May 8–11 and May 22–25 as part of a three-weekend schedule that replaced a 40-day plan negotiated by Supervisor Alan Wong and Mayor Daniel Lurie.
