1961 Dom Pérignon Magnum From Diana and Charles’s Wedding Fails to Sell at Danish Auction

Bidding peaked at 380,000 Danish crowns, below the auction house’s threshold.

Overview

  • Bruun Rasmussen offered the bottle with an estimate of 500,000–600,000 DKK (about €67,000–€80,000) and a starting price of 300,000 DKK.
  • The top bid reached 380,000 DKK (around €50,000), which the auctioneer deemed insufficient, leaving the lot unsold.
  • The auction house’s wine specialist said only about twelve magnums of the 1961 vintage exist and reported the bottle as drinkable after inspection and analysis.
  • The champagne was disgorged and labeled for the 29 July 1981 royal wedding, and the 1961 vintage corresponds to Princess Diana’s birth year.
  • The bottle remains with its anonymous private owner, who bought it from a London dealer, as past results for similar magnums have ranged from a no-sale in 2004 to a roughly $12,000 sale in 2008.
