19-Year-Old Killed After Gunfire Outside North Philadelphia House Party

Authorities have detained four teenagers and gathered extensive ballistic evidence as investigators search for other gunmen.

Overview

  • Late Sunday night, police responded to reports of multiple shots on the 1700 block of North 16th Street after the city’s gunshot detection system registered about 25 to 30 rounds.
  • A rented U‑Haul with five teenagers brought a 19-year-old who had been shot to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
  • Four other occupants of the van, ages 16, 17, 18 and 19, were taken into custody and the police have not released names or filed public charges.
  • Officers recovered roughly two dozen shell casings and found bullet damage to parked cars and the van, and investigators said a combative crowd at the house party initially hampered evidence collection.
  • The probe is in an early stage: police say they believe the shooting involved the U‑Haul group and a separate street group, the motive remains unknown, and investigators are seeking any additional suspects.
