Overview

  • Officials identified the rider as Luis Toaquiza after a collision between his e-bike and a car at Belmont Avenue and George Street in Franklin Park.
  • Emergency crews took Toaquiza to Loyola University Medical Center after the crash and he died there about 30 minutes later.
  • The collision happened Tuesday morning around 6:30 a.m., and Franklin Park police say the 63-year-old driver remained at the scene and cooperated with officers.
  • Belmont Avenue was closed for several hours while the Major Crash Unit and the West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force processed the scene and investigators said the cause remains under review.
  • The crash adds to local safety concerns over e-bikes and scooters as Illinois weighs a bill that would set statewide rules on e-bike speeds, age limits, registration and insurance.
