19-Year-Old Arrested in Killing of Ocala Convenience Store Worker

Police say surveillance video and a recovered firearm led detectives to conclude the shooting was not justified.

Overview

  • A Kings Food Mart employee, 45-year-old Ean Stein of Ocala, was found with gunshot wounds inside the store and later died at a local hospital.
  • Detectives say Stein and another person had a brief physical altercation inside the store just before the shooting and that 19-year-old Curnel Brown was present but not a participant in that fight.
  • Investigators used scene evidence, including surveillance video, to identify Brown as the shooter and recovered a firearm believed to be the weapon.
  • Officers located Brown nearby within minutes, arrested him without incident, and he is held at the Marion County Jail after being charged with second-degree murder.
  • The Ocala Police Department expressed condolences, pledged transparency as the investigation continues, and officials say the charge reflects a finding that the use of deadly force was unlawful though not necessarily premeditated.
