19-Year-Old Arrested After Dorm-Area Shooting at Virginia State University

The arrest ends an overnight manhunt but investigators say the multiagency probe will continue to determine whether additional suspects were involved.

  • Police say shots were fired near the Quad Annexes just after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday and officers found five people with gunshot wounds who were taken to area hospitals.
  • Victims range in age from 17 to 23, one of whom is a 20-year-old VSU student; one person remains in critical condition and the others have non-life-threatening injuries.
  • Chesterfield County officers arrested 19-year-old Camron Harris after finding him hiding in a dormitory closet and obtained eight felony warrants including malicious wounding and use of a firearm during a felony.
  • The investigation is led by Chesterfield County Police with help from VSU Police, the ATF and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, and authorities have not disclosed a motive while urging anyone with information to come forward.
  • Virginia State University, a historically Black public university with about 5,000–5,700 students, lifted its lockdown but maintained a heavy law-enforcement presence as the campus community prepares to begin the fall term.
