17-Year-Old Killed and Four Hurt as Car Strikes Group on Lake Maggiore Road

Investigators and prosecutors are pursuing forensic checks and toxicology tests to determine whether driver error, impairment or a mechanical fault caused the June 7 collision.

Overview

  • The collision occurred on Sunday afternoon on state road SS394 near Maccagno con Pino e Veddasca when a Fiat reportedly lost control, hit a guardrail and struck five pedestrians walking toward a lakeside beach.
  • A 17-year-old girl died at the scene and four other youths aged roughly 15–20 were taken to hospitals in serious condition, while the driver, a man in his early 30s, was injured but not reported in life-threatening condition.
  • Emergency services mounted a large response with multiple 118 helicopters, ambulances and advanced medical teams to stabilize and transfer the victims and to secure the scene.
  • Carabinieri from the Compagnia di Luino carried out on-site forensic inspections, collected witness statements and the vehicle has been seized pending technical analyses and the driver’s toxicology and alcohol tests.
  • The crash has shaken the local lakeside community and renewed questions about safety on the busy SS394, a road that sees heavy pedestrian and tourist use during warmer months and will likely prompt renewed calls for safety measures.
