17-Year-Old Identified After Car Fell From S.F. Freeway Into Police Impound Lot

Officials are probing vehicle speed to decide whether the 18-year-old driver will face citations or criminal charges.

Overview

  • A Chevrolet Camaro made an unsafe turning movement into a Recology tractor-trailer on Interstate 80 and then went over the metal railing, falling about 25 feet into the San Francisco Police Department impound lot on May 30.
  • The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the back-seat passenger who died as 17-year-old Lenin Homer Silva, who had graduated from Hillsdale High School days earlier and planned to play soccer at Skyline College.
  • Three other teens were hurt and extricated by San Francisco firefighters using hydraulic rescue tools while the Camaro driver was able to exit the vehicle on his own and the Recology driver was not seriously injured.
  • The California Highway Patrol says drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors but investigators are continuing to examine vehicle speeds before deciding on any citations or criminal charges for the 18-year-old driver.
  • Family, teammates and local clubs have held vigils and launched a GoFundMe called 'Honoring Lenin: Youth Sports Fund' to support the family and help young people access athletic programs.
