16-Year-Old Killed in Polaris Ranger Rollover in Monroe County

Officials say the UTV overturned after the driver lost control on a curve; the sheriff’s traffic unit has opened an active investigation and is seeking public tips.

Overview

  • The crash happened Friday evening in a private field on the 19700 block of Taft Road in Summerfield Township, Monroe County, with reports placing it around 5:24–5:30 p.m.
  • A 16-year-old Petersburg resident was driving a blue-and-black 2021 Polaris Ranger with two juvenile passengers when the vehicle left the main path, overturned onto its left side and ejected all three occupants, investigators said.
  • The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the two juvenile passengers were treated and released on site before being taken to a Metro Detroit hospital by their parents as a precaution.
  • Monroe County investigators reported none of the occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the rollover and said alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
  • The Traffic Services Division, led by Lt. Brian Quinn with Deputies Cody Carena and Hunter Chirillo, is continuing the probe and has asked anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office or Crime Stoppers for anonymous tips.
