16-Year-Old Drowns After Being Swept into Deep Water at Juhu Beach

Police say the boy ignored friends' warnings and was carried away by a large wave, prompting an Accidental Death Report and a formal inquiry.

Overview

  • A 16-year-old identified as Sarfraj Chhotelal Khan of Andheri East was pulled under by a large wave after moving into deeper water at Juhu Beach and later died at Cooper Hospital.
  • Santacruz police say Sarfraj went farther into the sea despite friends warning him not to, and that he and the three companions did not know how to swim.
  • His friends, named in reports as Mohammad Khan, Takluf Khan, and Jawabul Khan, attempted to rescue him but were unable to reach him before lifeguards and police retrieved his body.
  • Lifeguards and police took the boy to Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle West where doctors declared him dead, and the Santacruz police have registered an Accidental Death Report and opened inquiries.
  • The death adds to recent local drownings at busy Juhu Beach and highlights the risks to non-swimmers and the limits of bystander rescue without proper training or equipment.
