14-Year-Old Inventor Wins iENA Gold for Low-Cost Device That Pulls Water From Air

Researchers in Shanghai are now refining the buried-tube condensation design to test its use supporting reforestation in northern China.

  • The idea began with a kitchen observation by 14-year-old Jia Mingxuan and became a simple prototype of a partly buried metal tube fitted with recycled plastic bottle funnels to condense moisture into droplets.
  • The project won the youth gold medal at the 77th Nuremberg iENA inventions fair this week, where the evaluation jury praised the pragmatic use of basic physics.
  • The device works passively without electricity, pumps, or motors by letting warm, humid air enter the tube and cool against the buried section so water forms on the inner walls and drips down to plant roots.
  • Experts say the system produces only modest water yields because output depends on local humidity and temperature, so it is best suited to support young saplings or small-scale irrigation rather than replace large water supplies.
  • After the award, Jia began collaborating with Shanghai researchers to optimize materials and placement and to pilot the design within northern China reforestation programs known as the Great Green Wall.
