13-Year-Old Dies After Garden Grove Crash on Off-Road Electric Motorcycle

The case underscores a regional push to curb illegal off-road e-motorcycles ridden by minors.

Overview

  • The Santa Ana boy, who crashed Thursday near Magnolia Street and Larson Avenue, struck the center median at about 35 mph and later died at a hospital, police said.
  • Officers said the vehicle was an off-road electric motorcycle without pedals that is not street legal, and the teen wore a bicycle helmet rather than motorcycle-rated gear.
  • Police said Life360’s crash-detection alert prompted the response, and investigators are asking for witnesses or video to contact Investigator Lang at 714-741-5823 or mlang@ggcity.org.
  • Officials have not released the teen’s name; the Garden Grove Unified School District said he was a student and made counselors available to classmates.
  • The death follows recent Orange County cases involving teens on high-powered e-motorcycles, including a Lake Forest crash that led to an involuntary manslaughter charge against a mother and new calls for stricter enforcement.
