12-Year-Old Ski Racer Critically Injured in Crash at Maine’s Black Mountain

Emergency officials described warm, icy-like snow conditions on the mountain.

Overview

  • The boy crashed on the Allagash trail after reportedly hitting mud or a rock, came out of his skis, and went into the woods at high speed.
  • He was moved to the ski patrol room, taken by Med-Care ambulance to Rumford Hospital, then flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he remains in critical condition.
  • Black Mountain said in a brief Facebook post that the injured child was a young ski racer and that no further information was available.
  • This is the resort’s second serious child injury in a little over a week, following a Feb. 27 incident in which a 9-year-old girl with a head injury was airlifted to the same hospital.
  • Rumford’s deputy fire chief said recent warmth left the snow “marbly and mealy,” making it feel almost like ice.
