12-Year-Old Killed by Crocodile on Ghaghara River in Bahraich

An authenticated video has led forest teams to monitor the river as villagers press for permanent safety measures.

Overview

  • A 12-year-old boy named Sunil was seized by a crocodile at the Ghaghara riverbank and dragged into the water while washing after farm work, officials and multiple eyewitnesses said.
  • His uncle and dozens of villagers made desperate rescue attempts by throwing bricks and using bamboo poles and boats, but the reptile pulled the boy into deeper water and his body was recovered hours later.
  • Police confirmed the attack and authenticated a circulating video, and the recovered body was sent for post-mortem with officials saying the crocodile had partially devoured the lower body.
  • The district administration has approved ₹4 lakh in relief to the bereaved family under the state scheme and forest department teams are now monitoring the stretch of the Ghaghara where the attack occurred.
  • Rising monsoon waters routinely push crocodiles closer to fields and ghats, residents noted, and the attack has renewed calls for regular forest monitoring, warning signs, safe water points, and community rescue training.
