Overview
- The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office completed a search Friday that unearthed 117 intact canine remains from two dig sites on the 50-acre Miranda’s Rescue property.
- Forensic veterinarians and the U.S. Department of Agriculture X-rayed 70 of the recovered dogs and preliminarily found bullet fragments or other signs consistent with gunshot wounds in many of those animals.
- Most of the recovered remains carried microchips and investigators are scanning those chips and cataloging about 600 collars to link dogs to prior shelters or owners.
- No arrests or criminal charges have been filed; the multi-agency investigation has seized records and electronics and officials say evidence review will take significant time before prosecutors decide on charges.
- Records show hundreds of dogs were transferred to Miranda’s Rescue since January 2025 and shelters are working to trace and reclaim animals while the discovery raises questions about rescue intake, oversight and accountability.
