11 Monkeys, Including Two Langurs, Found Dead in Karnataka Forest as Food Poisoning Suspected

  • Carcasses of nine monkeys and two langurs were found within 200–500 metres in the Devarayanadurga–Durgadahalli area of Tumakuru, officials said.
  • Forest teams first reached the site on Friday evening and discovered additional carcasses on Saturday morning during a follow-up search.
  • Veterinarians reported rice in the oesophagus and intestines and bluish discoloration around the mouth and neck, indicating suspected poisoning from contaminated food.
  • Viscera have been sent to a Bengaluru laboratory and the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis, with reports awaited as surveillance in the area is increased.
  • The Forest Department registered a case under the Wildlife Protection Act and said there were no immediate signs of disease such as monkey fever.
