Overview
- Two separate shootings occurred early Sunday in Gary with one incident near 19th Avenue and Hanley that left six people self-transporting to Methodist Northlake Hospital.
- About 15 minutes later a second shooting on the 200 block of Chase Street prompted two more victims to arrive at a local hospital, including a 10-year-old boy who died there.
- A 50-year-old man who arrived with the child was stabilized and transferred to a Chicago-area hospital where he remains in critical condition.
- Authorities have not released the victims’ names, reported no suspects or motives, and urged anyone with information to call Detective Corporal Melendez at 219-881-1209 or Detective Salazar at 219-755-3720.
- Gary police described the loss of a child as a heartbreaking tragedy and said investigators from the city and the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force are actively working both cases, which could produce arrests or new public safety guidance as the probe continues.
