10-Year-Old Charged in Fatal Stabbing of Houston Girl After Arrest in Charlotte

The rare case tests how Texas handles serious charges against children.

Overview

  • The boy, arrested Wednesday in Charlotte by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, now faces a murder charge.
  • Houston police say the stabbing happened on Feb. 4 during a large fight outside an apartment on the 8000 block of Grow Lane, and 13-year-old Riley Dearmas died at a hospital.
  • At the scene, officers spoke with the boy and his mother, and the boy said he stabbed the girl and claimed self-defense as detectives began gathering witness accounts and surveillance video.
  • An HPD release says the juvenile was charged on March 31 and referred to Harris County Juvenile Probation authorities.
  • Police have not released the boy’s name or photo because he is a minor, and Texas law allows criminal charges starting at age 10.
